I always add some water to Meths before using it in my camping stove. I believe that you can add up to ~10% water with no adverse effect on 'cookability'. Apparently the addition of the water makes the Meths easier to light in very cold weather and reduces (or removes) the tendency to leave black sooty deposits on pans. I have no experience of the claim re cold weather lighting but I do not get any black sooty deposits on my cooking pans...

A ringing endorsement in favour of the Paraffin (Kerosene) Pressure Stove, e.g. the original Primus stove or its present reincarnations like my "Butterfly" model by one of the yachting world's greats!
I was pleased to note recently that Bernard Moitessier who successfully circumnavigated the world single-handed in his 39 ft ketch "Joshua" via the 3 capes in 1968/69 as a participant in the Sunday Times Golden Globe solo non-stop race used this type of stove exclusively in his galley (see his book entitled "A Sea Vagabond's World" published in 1998 by Sheridan House). Its nice to know that my choice of this type of stove has such a distinguished history in the yachting fraternity - I'm certainly very satisfied with mine!

I stumbled across this page looking for information on the Butterfly Primus-knockoff. Subsequently, I saw this stove:

Perhaps this might also be useful for your applications. I have no other knowledge beyond the web-site, which I find to be confusing. The company's primary product is its Petromax lantern reproduction.

Talking of 'space heaters' - I saw and consequently made a really good idea some years ago - A small earthenware plantpot upside down with a loop of coathanger throught the drain hole. Place on stove and voila a radiator ! I improved mine by tying (with wire) some 'sagars' inside.(these are the three legged stands used in a kiln to hold pots apart in firing - also what Taylors use in their heaters to collect heat from the flames !)
Cheap but if you need some warmth it does work !

Please be aware there is a Safety Warning on use of the Self contained cooker of the type shown in the illustration. Apparently there have been fires etc. To do with fitting the cannister and also not turning the burner plate right way up. Not a thing I would want on my wee boat. Although gas can be dangerous - many many of us have sailed many miles with good maintainence and upkeep of a gas system. Like most things takie care of it and it will take care of you - EG rubber gas hose is date stamped - make sure you change it ! Leak test every year. Safe sailing.

Hi,
I have an Oringo stove which I love. Unfortunately I have lost one of the screw in knobs which gimbals the stove. Anyone know where I can get a replacement without buying a whole new gimbals set?

Only other comment I have is watch that the catch fully shuts after filling as whilst you cannot open the catch if the stove is lit, you can light the stove if the catch is not closed.
